You have heard that nobody uses Google any more, that ChatGPT has replaced it, and that you now need AEO, GEO or AI SEO in place of the SEO you already pay for. You have also heard, probably from the agency you pay, that nothing has changed. Neither is true.
This guide to AEO vs SEO is written for the owner of an established Malaysian business. It explains what each one is, what the companies behind the search engines and the AI assistants have actually published, and where to put your effort first. Where something is not publicly documented, it says so.
The Short Answer
Search engine optimisation (SEO) gets your pages found and ranked on Google and Bing. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) gets your business quoted, linked or named inside an answer written by AI: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and others. They are two layers of one job. An AI answer can only use pages its engine has already found and been able to read, and that is what SEO takes care of. So SEO is the foundation, AEO is the layer on top, and an established business needs both, in that order.
What SEO Means Today
SEO is the work of making your website the one a search engine shows when a buyer types what you sell. It covers three things: a site the search engine can crawl and understand, pages that answer what people search for, and a reputation that other websites confirm by linking to you. A business that serves one town or a few neighbourhoods has a fourth, its Google Business Profile, which is the subject of our guide to the benefits of local SEO.
None of that has been cancelled. What has changed is the top of the results page. For some searches Google now writes a short answer of its own above the list of websites, with links to the pages it drew on. Google calls these AI Overviews, and its help page lists Malaysia among the countries where they are available, and Malay among the languages.
What AEO Means
An answer engine does not hand you ten links. It reads several pages and writes one reply. AEO is the work of making your pages easy for that engine to find, understand, quote and credit.
The engines a Malaysian buyer is likely to meet fall into two groups.
- AI answers inside a search engine. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in Google Search. Microsoft has AI summaries in Bing and its Copilot assistant.
- Assistants that search the web. ChatGPT and Perplexity each send out a crawler of their own and show the websites they found.
Google also describes how its AI features go about a search. Its documentation for site owners says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique it calls query fan-out: running several related searches across subtopics before the answer is written. In plain terms, one question from a buyer can become many searches, and the pages that answer the smaller questions well can be drawn in.
What The Companies Behind Them Have Published
Most of what you read about AEO is opinion. These four statements are not. Each comes from the company's own documentation, as it read in October 2026.
- Google. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. You do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special structured data, and the fundamentals of SEO continue to be worthwhile.
- OpenAI. OpenAI's crawler documentation says a crawler named OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that a site which opts out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A separate crawler, GPTBot, collects content that may be used to train its models. You can allow one and block the other.
- Perplexity. Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot exists to surface and link websites in its search results, is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, and should be allowed in your robots.txt file if you want to appear.
- Microsoft. The Bing Webmaster Tools team released a report in public preview in February 2026 that shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and in Bing's AI summaries. Its advice on content is short: clear headings, tables and FAQ sections help surface key information.
Here is what none of those documents contains: a formula for which page gets quoted. None states how the engine ranks one source above another inside an answer, and none gives a figure for what a link, a review or a mention is worth. When an article quotes an exact percentage for any of that, it is quoting somebody's study or somebody's guess, not the company that runs the engine.
AEO vs SEO, Side By Side
- The goal. SEO: your page ranks in the list of results. AEO: your business is quoted, linked or named inside the answer.
- What reads your site. SEO: the crawlers of Google and Bing. AEO: the same two, plus the crawlers of the assistants, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- What a win looks like. SEO: a click through to your site. AEO: a mention with a link, and sometimes a buyer who arrives already knowing your name.
- How you measure it. SEO: rankings, clicks and enquiries. AEO: citations where a tool reports them, your own spot checks, and what new customers say when you ask how they found you.
- How well it is documented. SEO: thoroughly, by Google and Microsoft. AEO: only the entry requirements. The rest is practice and testing.
Where They Overlap: Do These First
Most of the work serves both, which is good news for your budget. Do this part before you spend anything on AEO alone.
- Make sure you can be read. Google's list of fundamentals starts with allowing crawling, both in your robots.txt file and by your hosting or content delivery network. Ask whoever looks after your website to confirm that nothing blocks search engines by accident.
- Put the important words in text. Google asks that important content be available in textual form. A price list saved as a picture, a menu that is one large image and a catalogue that exists only as a PDF sent over WhatsApp cannot be quoted by anything.
- Answer the question first. Open each important page with two or three sentences that answer what the visitor came to ask, then give the detail. None of the documents above sets a required length. A direct answer is simply the easiest thing for a person or a machine to find and repeat.
- Say what only you can say. Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether a page provides original information and shows first-hand expertise. Your real prices, your own photos and the mistakes you see customers make cannot be copied by a competitor, or by a chatbot.
- Use headings, lists and tables. A heading phrased the way a customer would ask it, followed by a clear answer, serves a reader skimming on a phone and matches the advice Microsoft gives.
- Keep your facts consistent. Google names up to date Business Profile information among its fundamentals, and asks that any structured data match the text a visitor can see. Your name, address, phone number and opening hours should read the same everywhere.
What Is Specific To AEO: Do These Second
- Let the right crawlers in. Check your robots.txt file and your website firewall for OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. OpenAI says a change takes about 24 hours to register, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Decide separately whether to allow GPTBot, which is about training and not about search.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Because one question can fan out into many searches, a page about aircond servicing in Shah Alam earns its place by also answering what a chemical wash costs, how long it takes, which areas you cover and what the warranty is. Write it in the words your buyers use, whether English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese.
- Be easy to identify. An engine that looks your business up should find the same name, the same services and real people behind it: an About page, named staff with their qualifications, and a way to reach you.
- Start measuring. The Generative AI performance report in Search Console counts how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google's guide to its generative AI features names it as the report to use. Bing Webmaster Tools shows citations in its own report. For everything else, write down ten questions your buyers ask, put them to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google once a month, and record who gets named.

FAQ markup. For years, adding FAQ structured data could earn a larger listing on Google, with questions that opened under your result. Google's documentation changelog records that the FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search in May 2026. Questions and answers on a page are still worth writing, because buyers ask questions. Write them for the reader, and do not pay extra for a result that no longer exists.
The llms.txt file. This is a proposed text file that describes your site to AI tools. Google's guide to its generative AI features says that Google Search does not use such files and ignores them, so one will neither harm nor help your visibility there. Adding one is cheap and harmless, and it is not a reason to choose one supplier over another. There is more about it in our step by step guide to AI SEO.
How To Split Your Effort
Nobody has published a correct ratio, and an agency that gives you one is giving you a judgement. Here is ours, by type of business.
- Businesses that serve an area. Clinics, workshops, tuition centres, restaurants and contractors. Most of the effort belongs in classic and local SEO, because the map and the reviews still decide who gets the call. The AEO part is small and practical: accurate facts, clear service pages, real prices.
- Business to business and professional firms. An industrial supplier in Penang, a law firm in Kuala Lumpur, an accounting practice in Johor Bahru. Their buyers research for weeks before they contact anyone, so put more of the effort into pages that answer detailed questions.
- Online shops. Product and category pages still do the selling. Add honest comparisons, and keep your product information complete and current.
- Schools, training providers and publishers. Your visitors arrive with questions, which is what AI answers are for. You need both layers from the start.
In every case the foundation takes the larger share in the first months, for a simple reason: an AI answer cannot quote a page that a crawler could not read.
Is SEO Dead?
No. Google's own documentation says the fundamentals of SEO continue to be worthwhile for its AI features, and a page has to be indexed before those features can link to it. Google also says that when people click through from a results page with an AI Overview, those clicks are of higher quality. That is Google's claim about its own product, so check it against your own enquiries.
What has died is publishing thin pages in bulk and waiting for the traffic. Google's guidance on generative AI content says that using AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. Use AI to research and to draft, then have someone who knows the business add what is true and specific, and check every fact.
What To Do This Quarter
- Check access. Confirm that the crawlers of Google, Bing, ChatGPT search and Perplexity are not blocked.
- Rework your ten most important pages. Put a direct answer at the top and the follow-up questions underneath.
- Fix your facts. Business Profile, contact details and About page, the same everywhere.
- Take a baseline. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and your ten buyer questions put to three assistants.
- Ask every new customer how they found you. Add "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" to the options on your enquiry form, and ask the same question on WhatsApp.
When It Is Worth Getting Help
An owner with a capable web person can do everything above. It gets harder when the site is large, when the foundation needs rebuilding, or when nobody has the hours. That is the work in our AI SEO service, which covers GEO and AEO, and it sits on top of our SEO service, because the second layer does not hold without the first.
Two things you should know before you call. First, our SEO starts from RM8,960 a month, and every price is listed in ringgit. Second, we are a Singapore company, and Singapore is where most of our track record was built. We would rather you heard that from us now than on the call.
The offer on this site is Guaranteed >2X ROI, Or We'll Continue Work Free. It has conditions, and they are set out on the page where you book a free 30-minute call. On that call we look at how your business shows up on Google and in the AI assistants today, before we say a word about ourselves.
Questions Malaysian Owners Ask About AEO And SEO
How is AEO different from GEO and AI SEO?
Mostly in name. AEO stresses being chosen as the answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) stresses appearing in text written by generative AI. AI SEO is the everyday term for both. The work overlaps almost completely, so pick one word, use it with your staff and move on.
Will Google penalise a page written for AEO?
Not for being clear, direct and well structured, which is all that honest AEO asks of a page. The risk lies elsewhere: Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse covers pages generated in bulk without adding value for the reader.
How long does AEO take to work?
None of the documentation above gives a timeline for being named in an answer. Crawler access is quick: OpenAI and Perplexity both describe changes registering within about a day. Being named in answers depends on your category, your competitors and how good your pages are. Anyone who gives you a date without looking at those is guessing.
Do I still need links from other websites?
Yes, for SEO. Google says it uses links as a signal when it determines how relevant a page is. For AI answers, none of the documentation above says what links or mentions are worth. Earn them for the customers and the rankings they bring, and treat any effect on AI answers as a bonus.
Should my pages be in English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese?
Write in the language your buyers ask their questions in. Google lists Malay among the languages its AI Overviews are available in. We work in English, and in Chinese where your buyers search and read in Chinese. We do not write Bahasa Malaysia content in-house today, and we will tell you on the call if your market needs it.
Is Best Marketing a Malaysian company?
No. Best Marketing is a Singapore company, registered in Singapore. We work with you over Zoom, and our prices on this site are in ringgit.
